About Southern Belle’s Cakery
Dedicated to my Sissy who taught me everything about baking…
and how to be a true Southern Belle
Southern Belle’s Cakery was formed in 2008. However, to better understand the roots of SBC, we have to start the story way back to when I was a little girl.
I grew up in Mobile, Alabama just like any other southern girl: cooking and baking in someone’s kitchen. Luckily for me, I learned to cook and bake in my great grandmother Sissy’s kitchen. We formed an amazing and close relationship, one that I cherish and one that not too many get to have with their great grandmother.
My Sissy is what we call a true “Southern Belle”. She loved to cook, and everything revolved around “what we goin’ cook”, as she would say. She was so full of life, always making everyone laugh and carrying on, and man she knew how to bake! She taught me so much at an early age about school, life, relationships, and most of all my way around the kitchen. Southern Belle’s Cakery formed out of that precious bond and love for cooking that I shared with my Sissy.
Though Sissy is no longer with us, I feel her warmth, love, and presence every day. No matter what cake I am baking, the whole house always smells of one of her cakes and I cannot help but reminisce and smile. Her memory keeps my passion burning, and I know if she were here she would love this crazy adventure I am on and by keeping her Sissy Cake memory alive! So I am baking in the memory of my Sissy, and that’s where Southern Belle’s Cakery comes from.
I now live in Palm Beach, Florida with my wonderful husband, Joey and our beautiful two year old daughter. My family, friends, and my one-and-only love are very important to me. Without their support, I would have never found my talent for baking and turning it into a business. Though I would still be baking, which would be fine in keeping my husband happy, as my Sissy taught me that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, and I do believe that is how I got my husband. But I would have never discovered my full potential, and that’s where family and friends come in.
A few years ago, my mother Julie introduced me to this little show called “Ace of Cakes”. She kept telling me that what they did on that show was something I could do. I didn’t pay much attention to the show in that way, but found myself always watching it and excited to find out what crazy cake they were going to make next. I give thanks to my best friend, my Mom, for that introduction!
The support that has been given to me by my friends and family has truly made my passion and dream become a reality. I have been influenced by so many people around me and even more so by the women in my family. I am very fortunate to be surrounded by strong and independent women who have taught me that if you truly want something it will happen for you, with hard work, dedication and never forgetting your dreams. With that being said, I have to thank my mother for opening my eyes to something that was right in front of me. My mother-in-law, Elizabeth, for being such a Strong and Influential woman to me everyday and for believing in me! And to my Sissy, I feel somehow because of her this venture dropped into my lap and said “this is what you need to do”. I feel as though Sissy has shed her light over all this. Sissy is the one who inspired and continues to inspire SBC today.
